Atlantic

Large, black spots on gills. Black, X-shaped spots on upper back.

Has fewer than 13 rays on anal fin.

Squared tail with no spots. Possibly looking worn-down or eroded due to pen nets.

  
Although they can be found in B.C.’s waters, Atlantic Salmon are NOT a native species and should be reported to authorities if encountered.

70 to 80 cm (28 to 32 inches)+

Weight

3 to 5 kg (7 to 11 lbs)+

Habitat

Native to Northern Atlantic. In B.C., any Atlantic Salmon caught wild have escaped from commercial farming pens.

Fishing

Caught by accident when fishing for other species.

Cooking

Although likely safe to eat, it is recommended to freeze the fish whole and contact the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans at LINK.
