Dungeness Crab

Light brown to dark brown back, with yellowish belly.

Claws have white tips.

  
The most popular crab in B.C. waters, the Dungeness is highly prized delicacy sought for its sweet, tender meat.

Length

16.5 to 20 cm (6 ½ to 8 inches)

Weight

Varied.

Habitat

Alaska to California. Recent arrived in Atlantic Ocean. In B.C., they are very widespread.

Fishing

Found in both shallow waters and also as deep as 180 m (590 feet), they prefer sandy or muddy bottoms and kelp beds, and are caught using traps with a variety of baits.

Cooking

Boiling and steaming are popular.

Must measure 16.5 cm (6.6 inches)+. Females may NOT be kept, and MUST be returned safely to water.
