Mussel

Smooth or ridged, teardrop-shaped shell. Bluish-black in colour.

7 to 10 cm (3 to 4 inch) but can grow larger.

  
Mussels are a very common sight along the coast, and large colonies of them can be seen anchored to rocks where the tide meets the shore.

Varied.

Habitat

Found worldwide, but primarily in temperate zones. In B.C., they are very widespread and common.

Fishing

Abundant on beaches with rocky bottoms, Mussels are easily collected by hand. Choose ones approximately the same size as your thumb. Leave smaller ones to continue growing.

Cooking

Steaming with garlic and wine is popular.
