Octopus

Soft, bulbous head/body.

Eight arms, with rows of suckers.

Typically reddish-brown.

  
Highly intelligent, Octopus are most often caught accidentally, when they enter shrimp and crab traps in search of an easy meal.

4 m (12 feet)+

Weight

15 kg (33 lbs)+

Habitat

Widely ranged, in temperate and tropical waters. The Giant Pacific Octopus is found across the northern Pacific Ocean. In B.C., typically found within small dens in rocky areas.

Fishing

Usually caught accidentally. Also trapped, and collected by divers.

Cooking

Firm, slightly sweet meat. Pan-frying and eating raw (as sushi) are popular.

Notices

Collecting using sharp instruments (like spears) and some other methods are prohibited. Check regulations.
