Red Rock Crab

Brick red back, with whitish belly.

Claws have black tips.

  
Smaller than the more common Dungeness, Red Rock Crabs produce less meat but are sought after for their sweet, delicate flavour.

11.5 to x 16 cm (4 ½ to 6 ½ inches)

Weight

Varied.

Habitat

Alaska to California. In B.C., they are widespread.

Fishing

Found in shallow waters and as deep as 80 m (260 feet), they prefer rock, gravel and kelp beds and are caught using traps with a variety of baits.

Cooking

Boiling and steaming are popular.

Must measure 11.5 cm (4.6 inches)+. Females may NOT be kept, and MUST be returned safely to water.
