Rockfish

Short and blunt head with small mouth.

Typically oval, squat bodies with spiky or spiny fins.

Often bright and colourful, but varies by species.

  
There are many different species of Rockfish, with a wide variety of physical characteristics.

Length

Varies by species. Up to 75 cm (30 inches)+

Weight

Varies by species. Up to 11 kg (25 lbs)+

Habitat

Wide range, but most species are in North Pacific. In B.C., they are often found near the shore Georgia Straight and along the coast of Vancouver Island.

Fishing

Year ‘round. Living near the bottom, heavy weights are needed in deeper waters.

Cooking

Firm-fleshed and lean, with mild flavour. Crispy pan-frying in oil is popular.

Notices

Threatened due to over-fishing. Be sure to know permitted catch limits.
