Sea Cucumber

Cylindrical with leathery skin covered in “warts.”

Resembling a cucumber, or even a large slug, Sea Cucumbers have a number of unique physical characteristics, including the ability to deform and flatten their bodies to fit into small spaces.

Length

20 to 40 cm (8 to 16 inches), but varies widely with species from 2 cm (1 inch) to 2 m (6 feet)

Weight

Varied.

Habitat

Found worldwide in both shallow and deeper waters. In B.C., they are wide-ranging and prefer rock or gravel sea floors.

Cooking

Considered a delicacy, especially in some Asian cultures, Sea Cucumber is added to a variety of cooked dishes.
