Spot Prawn

Shelled body, multiple spindly legs, large muscular tails and long antennae.

Typically pink, but can also be brownish.

Varying in size, but with the same general appearance, there are half a dozen species of shrimp that live in the waters off the B.C. coast that are collected for food.


7 to 25 cm (3 to 10 inches) depending on species.




Found worldwide, in both saltwater and freshwater. In B.C., local species are typically found in deeper waters.


Typically caught with traps and nets. Sometimes collected by divers or even picked by hand in shallow waters.


Tail meat is firm, with delicate flavour. Grilling and sautéing are popular.
