Red Tail (Red Tail Surf Perch) or Grey Tail (Barred Surf Perch)

Surf Perch often congregate in schools close to the shoreline, looking for food where the surf hits the shore.


Up to 30 cm (12 inches)+ depending on species.


Up 1.5 kg (3 lbs)+ depending on species.


British Columbia to California. In B.C., they are rare but typically found on sandy beaches where surf meets the shore along Southwestern Vancouver Island.


Shore casting from beaches, but also piers. Though a small fish, heavier tackle is popular to manage heavy surf.


Mild flavour and texture. Grilling and crispy pan-frying whole are popular.
